In 1938, the OKB H. H. Polikarpov began designing a fighter I-180. Obtaining high flight characteristics of the new fighter was to provide a star-shaped air-cooled engine M-88. At the end of 1938 the first prototype of the I-180-1 was built. December 15 was the first flight ended in an accident and the death of the famous test pilot VP Chkalov. Despite the disaster and the arrest of some designers in 1939 was made second prototype I-180-2. At the final stage of the tests on September 5, 1939 during the 53rd flight, the aircraft entered an uncontrollable corkscrew and crashed. Pilot T. P. Suzi is dead. The third prototype of the I-180-3 was built in January 1940. It installed a new engine M-88R, oil cooler placed under the motor.
