RAF BE.12 – bright representative of the group of British "emergency" fighters, created in the autumn of 1915 as a response to the appearance at the front of German monoplanes "Fokker". The aircraft Royal Air Factory BE-12 was a fairly simple conversion of a double RAF BE.2s with its alteration into a single and installation of a more powerful engine.
Prototype converted from serial BE.2C, came to the test in August 1915, the Machine received a 12-cylinder air-cooled engine RAF 4 (140 HP) instead of 70-horsepower "Renault". The armament of the prototype consisted of one machine gun, "Lewis", located on the left side of the fuselage. The machine gun was tested first with bullet cut-offs on the propeller blades, and then — with a synchronizer.
the test Results were found to be quite satisfactory, and on September 30, 1915 the military ordered the first batch of 50 copies. The production of serial machines began in March 1916.
the Total production amounted to about 600 units, of which about 500 were produced by Daimler and 50 by Coventry Orders Works and Standard Motor Company.
