With the defeat in world war II, Germany was divided into two spheres of influence. In 1955, West Germany became a member of NATO, as the territory of Germany bordered the GDR, the issue of national security was particularly acute, for the defense of the border were recreated armored forces. Leopard, also known as 'Standard Panther', became the heir to the German tank technology, which created such outstanding machines as the Tiger and Panther. Prototypes were built in 1961 and 1962, in 1963 the tank was adopted.
