Rodney, like his twin brother Nelson, was designed and built in the twenties of the last century after the entry into force of the Washington Treaty. Among other things, the Treaty ordered the cessation of construction of new battleships and the destruction of those already in construction. But the law, of course, was not written for the initiators of the contract. Because in the time only Japan had in authoritarianism ships with instruments of 406 mm ("Nagato" and "Mutsu" - in construction of) Americans and the British, wanting to also introduce in build such ships, have made Japanese easing and was allowed these ships to leave. In the same Treaty, however, the Americans were allowed to finish three of the four Maryland class battleships. And since the British ships of this class were not at all, the conference allowed the British Navy to build two battleships with guns 406 mm, limiting their displacement to 35,000 tons.
