the Seawolf Submarine was designed as a faster and better armed replacement for the Los Angeles submarine. The first boat of this class, Seawolf (SSN21) was ordered in January 1989 and put into operation in July 1997. Next, Connecticut (SSN22) was commissioned in December 1998. Third, Jimmy Carter (SSN 23) has been modified for payload entrainment and underwater speed. Seawolf was the brainchild of the Cold war and with its end the doctrine of the development of the submarine fleet was revised. The release of prohibitively expensive Seawolf was discontinued in favor of smaller and cheaper submarines of the Virginia class.
