the Creation of the type XXIII submarine was a priority. To reduce development time, Helmut Walter developed a new design based on the previous Type XXII. By June 1943, the original design was ready and Assembly began in parallel at several shipyards in Germany, France, Italy and the occupied part of the USSR. Type XXII had a fully welded structure. As a power plant used diesel engine MWM RS-348, used on the Type IXD. The electric motor AEG GU 4463/8 was a simplified version of the electric motor used for Type VII. The skillful use of Type XXII was an outstanding submarine, its speed was high as the water is still under water. Creating a technologically advanced design during the war was a logistical nightmare. Constant disruptions of terms, bombing, lack of material and workers led to the fact that of the 280 ordered submarines was built only 61.
