HMS RODNEY was laid at the cammell Laird shipyard on December 28, 1922 and launched on December 17, 1925, November 10, 1927 the ship was put into service. Received its name in honor of the British Admiral of the 18-19 century George Rodney .
During the Norwegian campaign, in April 1940, Rodney received damage from a 500 kg bomb dropped by a German bomber, but was repaired and continued service. May 27, 1941 Rodney took part in the operation to sink the Bismarck, which resulted in the German battleship was destroyed, during the battle the ship released from its 16 inch (406mm) guns almost 380 shells. From the end of 1941 Rodney was involved in escorting convoys to the Mediterranean sea. The ship took part in the Sicilian operation and became the first British cruiser to enter Malta since 1940. From 6 June to 7 July 1944 took part in operation "overlord" produced more than 500 shots from 16-inch guns and hundreds of 6 and 4.7 inch. During the war, the ship has passed more than 156,000 nautical miles and because of problems with the engine room was withdrawn from the fleet in the first year after the war.
