Dunkirk the battleship was a type of warship , built for the French Navy in the 1930s - .Dunkerques were designed to withstand German linear battleships. Their main armament was two to four 330 mm turrets forward, with the Kevlar tape with a thickness of 225 mm (8.9 inches). They were smaller, with a normal volume of 26,500 to 27,300 tons and a smaller main artillery caliber than the battleships authorized by the Naval Treaty in Washington, but their speed was 7 knots higher than all battleships built between 1920 and 1937. When they were commissioned only their current battle cruisers were the British Royal Navy and the Imperial Japanese Navy.Given their characteristics, they have been alternatively classified as fast battleships, small battleships, cruisers and even "line ships" (Fr. navires de ligne).Two ships, Dunkerque and Strasbourg were completed. Together they formed the 1st division de Lin ("1st division line") and saw service in the early years of world war II. While they never encountered German pocket battleships, they were intended to counteract, they suffered from the British attack of mers El Kebir and remained under the control of the Vichy authorities until they were flooded in Toulon in November 1942.
