Externally, the F6F-5 did not differ from the F6F-3. The side Windows behind the pilot's seat, characteristic of the F6F-3, were also available on the first 2000 F6F-5 fighters. All F6F-3s had one adjustable and one fixed trimmer on the left Aileron. The F6F-5 had an adjustable and fixed trimmer on both ailerons, while the trimmer on the left Aileron could be adjusted from the cockpit.
