Born by compromise and emerged from the medium bomber project, the Lancaster became the most successful British heavy bomber of the second world war. Its development began when Europe had been at war for three months, but by the time the war was over, about 7,300 had been built. The Lancaster was so heavily used by the Royal air force that about half of that number, 3345, is listed as lost in combat missions. The Lancasters of the Bomber command made 156,000 sorties between 1942 and 1945, dropping over 600,000 tons of bombs, including 9988 kg of the Grand slam Deep penetration bomb, which no other war-time production aircraft could carry, 5448 kg of the tallboy bomb, and the well-known Wallis bombs to destroy dams.
