Submarines of the improved IIB series were built on Deutsche Werke (U13 - U16) and Germany Shipyard in Kiel (U7 - U12, U17 - U24). They all joined the Kriegsmarine in 1935-1936 gg Of them were formed into two fleets - the 1st "Weddigen" and the 3rd "Lohs".
With the outbreak of World war II, submarines of type IIB were actively used to mine ports and estuaries on the East coast of England and Scotland, as well as to combat merchant shipping in The English channel.
