Additional Information
the Rapid development of navigation and the opening of trade between Europe and the Far East led at the end of the XV century to the beginning of a series of expeditions. However, the journey to India around Africa was extremely difficult and time-consuming. Genoese Christopher Columbus wanted to reach India by sea, circling the globe to the West. His proposal was not understood in his native Italy, but he found support from the Spanish crown. On August 3, 1492, the fleet of three ships sailed from the Spanish port of Palos, and 12 of October the sailor Rodrigo de Triano saw the earth. It was one of the Bahamas. So, 500 years after the Vikings, the New World was rediscovered. Later this day will be called the day of discovery of America, although Columbus himself until the end of his days believed that he found a new way to India.
By the time the Santa Maria, Nina and Pint became the most famous ships in the world, their appearance could only be judged by the sketches that Columbus made in the ship's log. It is only established that not all of them were caravels. If " Nina” can be conventionally called a Caravel-Latin, and “pint” – Caravel-Redondo, the flagship “Santa Maria”, the largest and heaviest in the management of the flotilla ship – a typical Karaka. More recent studies give only approximate ideas about these ships, since they are based on what is known about these types of ships. The “Santa Maria” itself did not return from this voyage – on Christmas day, December 25, 1492 it sank at the rocky reefs of Haiti.
Published basic data of this famous ship: length – 23 meters, width – 6,7 meters, displacement 230-250 tons. The ship was armed with four 20-pound and six 12-pound guns. The crew was made up of 90-120 people.
