Additional Information
"Amerigo Vespucci" is the oldest ship of the contemporary Naval Forces of Italy, was built at the Royal Naval shipyard of Castellammare di Stabia (near Naples) and was launched on 22 February 1931.
This sailboat is recognized as one of the largest and most majestic ships. The Amerigo Vespucci was one of two twin ships launched in 1928. The second ship "Christopher Columbus" in 1949 received the reparations of the USSR. Renamed in "Danube", it went on the Black sea, yet did not rise on a joke in 1963, and in 1970 it was dismantled in the Odessa port.
Manoeuvring of sails and moving of Rey is carried out exclusively manually by means of ropes from vegetable fiber (hemp). The total length of these ropes is more than 30 kilometers. In fact, in addition to the engine, the vast majority of equipment on Board has manual control and, accordingly, all actions related to the maneuvering of sails are carried out only manually.
the Full raising of the ship's sails involves approximately 200 crew members, i.e. half of the total personnel on Board the ship. These steps take approximately 60 minutes to complete.
For many years this sailboat has been a true symbol of Italy and its Navy. During stops in different countries on Board "Amerigo Vespucci" held numerous events that contribute to the international prestige of Italy.
From the moment of putting into operation the ship was used primarily for training cadets of the Naval Academy and for young men from sailing associations.
Amerigo Vespucci has crossed the Strait of Gibraltar more than 100 times, the Celtic canal about 20 times, the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles more than once, and the Panama, Suez and Corinthian canals only once. Four times the ship crossed the equator line. In total, this ship has covered more than 400,000 miles for more than 7,000 navigation days (approximately 20 years).
