In 1936, two of the most powerful ships in German history, the battleships Bismarck and Tirpitz, were laid on the stocks of the Blom and FOSS shipyard in Hamburg. The commander of the Naval forces of Germany, Admiral Erich Reder gave them the role of raiders – hunters of merchant ships operating in remote ocean areas on enemy communications.
In 1940, the Bismarck entered service, and six months later, barely completing a course of combat training, was sent to the Atlantic, accompanied by the heavy cruiser Prince Eugen. Early on the morning of 24 may 1941 the "Bismarck" and "Prinz Eugen" was found with the English squadron. As a result of a short but fierce battle, the English battleship "hood" exploded and sank in a few minutes (of the entire team was saved only 3 people), and the newest battleship "Prince of Wales" was seriously damaged and left the battlefield.
the Hunt for the Bismarck is one of the most dramatic pages in the history of wars at sea. On the morning of may 26, 1941, the British reconnaissance aircraft Catalina found the Bismarck and brought it to the squadron of Vice Admiral Sommerville. Soon the German battleship was attacked by torpedo planes. One of the torpedoes exploded under the stern of the battleship and jammed the steering of the Bismarck, but only fifteen hours later the Bismarck overturned and sank after firing from the battleships Rodney and king George V and hitting several torpedoes from the cruiser Dorsetshire. From 2065 man team was saved 107.
in Order to track down, surround and sink the only German battleship, the British had to concentrate huge forces – eight battleships and battlecruisers, two aircraft carriers, eleven cruisers, eleven destroyers, six submarines and make more than a hundred sorties.
