Additional Information

In 1936, two of the most powerful ships in German history, the battleships Bismarck and Tirpitz, were laid on the stocks of the Blom and FOSS shipyard in Hamburg. The commander of the Naval forces of Germany, Admiral Erich Reder gave them the role of raiders – hunters of merchant ships operating in remote ocean areas on enemy communications.

the "Bismarck", which Entered service somewhat later than its "older brother", was slightly larger and somewhat better armed (in particular, two four-tube torpedo tubes were installed on it and anti-aircraft weapons were reinforced).
All the summer and autumn of 1941 the Tirpitz was tested in the Baltic sea, and then was sent to Norway with his presence to constrain the actions of the British battleships and attack convoys.
addressing the threat from the "Tirpitz" would have allowed the British to redeploy to the Pacific theater up to three of the newest battleships of the "King George V". But the Admiralty was forced to keep them in Scapa Flow, a naval base in Scotland, instead of using them in active operations against the Japanese.
In March 1942, tirpicz, accompanied by destroyers, went to intercept the convoy PQ-12, but could not find it. The second military campaign "Tirpitz" took place only in July of 1942 – the so-called "operation "Rosselsprung" ("knight's Move"). The target was the infamous PQ-17 convoy, released on June 27, 1942 from the Hvalfjord in Iceland. However, on 5 July the Tirpitz was attacked by the Soviet submarine K-21 under the command of Hero of the Soviet Union, captain 2 rank Lunin and hastily returned to base. Meanwhile, the British guard ships left the convoy in the hope to cut off the "Tirpitz" from the bases of V. Thus, defenseless merchant ships went to the mercy of German submarines and bomber aircraft. From the convoy killed two-thirds of the ships!
In September 1943 against the battleship was used new weapons – midget submarines of the "Midget". To the Parking lot of the battleship, they were delivered in tow by conventional submarines, and then acted independently. But the dwarf boats needed a very accurate knowledge of the location of the Tirpitz, as the energy resources of these boats were very limited. Data on the composition and deployment of heavy German ships in Alten fjord were obtained by the Soviet pilot captain Elkin, who three times passed over the fjord on a low-level flight, filming the Parking lot of all large ships. 22 September 1943 Tirpitz was damaged in the attack "of Mijatov". The repair took several months. On April 3, 1944, in preparation for the next sea voyage, tirpicz was attacked by Barracuda dive bombers. After receiving 14 hits, mainly armor-piercing bombs, the battleship went down for another three months.
on 15 September 1944, the British Lancasters took off from the Soviet yagodnik airfield near Arkhangelsk (the distance from the bases in England was too great, so the RAID was organized from Soviet territory) again inflicted heavy damage to the battleship. After that "Tirpitz" was moved to Tromso fjord for use as a floating battery. This was his last stop. On November 11, 1944, the battleship received several direct hits with 5.5-ton tollboy bombs dropped by the Lancasters of the 617th and 9th squadrons, rolled over and sank.
