In 1936, two of the most powerful ships in German history, the battleships Bismarck and Tirpitz, were laid on the stocks of the Blom and FOSS shipyard in Hamburg. The commander of the Naval forces of Germany, Admiral Erich Reder gave them the role of raiders – hunters of merchant ships operating in remote ocean areas on enemy communications.

After that "Tirpitz" was moved to Tromso fjord for use as a floating battery. This was his last stop. On November 11, 1944, the battleship received several direct hits with 5.5-ton tollboy bombs dropped by the Lancasters of the 617th and 9th squadrons, rolled over and sank.
