Additional Information
the Juan Sebastian de Elcano — a training vessel of the Spanish Navy — is used as a training base for cadets of the Naval Academy, as well as as a "goodwill Ambassador". It is the largest of the schooners of the world training fleet. According to the type of sailing weapons, "Elcano" refers to Topsail (Topsail) schooners – on the foremast it carries four straight sails and three oblique, on the other three masts – only oblique sails.
the Ship was designed and built at the shipyard "Echevarrieta and Larrinaga" in Cadiz, was launched on March 5, 1927
the Schooner is named in honor of Juan Sebastian de Elcano (1476-1526), the first sailor to circumnavigate the world voyage. He was one of the officers of the expedition of Fernand Magellan, who left Spain in 1519 on five ships in search of the Western route to The spice Islands. Members of the expedition suffered a lot of tests: they were sick with scurvy, for a long time repaired the failed ships, fought with the natives. Magellan himself died in battle with the hostile inhabitants of one of the Philippine Islands, and then Juan de Elcano as the senior surviving officers took command. The remains of the expedition reached their homeland in 1522 on Board the only surviving ship "Victoria". The schooner deservedly bears this name, as she rounded the globe 10 times and made 71 training trips with a call to 130 ports of 60 States. The sailboat took part in the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the United States in 1976 and in the Columbus Regatta in 1992, where due to Spanish origin, as well as the fact that the transatlantic part of the regatta began from Cadiz, played the role of the flagship. Juan Sebastian de Elcano participated in sailing competitions in Osaka (1997) and in competitions in 2000 along the Cadiz—Bermuda route, after which he attended Opsail-2000 events in such us ports as Norfolk (Virginia) and new York.
