In 1942, a sailing training ship don Juan of Austria was laid at the shipyard of the Spanish city of Cadiz. The new sailboat was designed to replace the training vessel Juan Sebastian de Elcano and was almost the same type with it. The difference is in the sailing weapons. "Juan Sebastian de Elcano" is a Topsail schooner, i.e. carries oblique sails on all masts, and four additional straight lines on the foremast. The new sailboat on the type of rig is barquentine, i.e. on the fore-mast only direct the sail.

Since then ship is actively used for training of cadets and recruits, and also acts as a "messenger of good will" while performing representational functions attended the meetings of the heads of state or government and other dignitaries. "Esmeralda" (135039 Modeler 1/350 Barquentine "Esmeralda") went to three hundred ports around the globe. This ship covers a record number of miles per year. The sailboat participated in several round-the-world voyages and visited North America, Europe and the far East more than once. In its type of vessels "Esmeralda" (135039 Modeler 1/350 Barquentine "Esmeralda") holds the record for daily mileage, sometimes reaching a daily speed of 16 knots.
