In the 70s, it was decided to replenish the fleets with diesel-electric submarines of the next generation. They should be relatively small, low-noise, high-speed. Since such ships were going to be delivered to our allies under the Warsaw Pact, they, in addition to the usual project number 877, and assigned a proper name — "Varshavyanka". With the advent of this type of boat, NATO received the designation "Kilo", the us submarine fleet has lost its advantage in silence, which had for a long period. Submarines such as "Varshavyanka" are designed to destroy submarines and surface ships of the enemy, the violation of its Maritime communications, preventing the conduct of marine amphibious operations, the implementation of mine staging, reconnaissance. The boat is distinguished by high seaworthiness and maneuverability, exceptional low noise, high combat power and reliability. These qualities brought the "Warszawianka" international recognition. The boat received an automated weapons system. Six torpedo tubes of 533 mm caliber, located in the bow compartment, can be equipped with mines. The ammunition includes up to 18 torpedoes or 24 mines, if necessary, their number varies. Submarines built for the Soviet fleet, in addition, received a defensive anti-aircraft missile system "Strela-3", for use in the surface position.
