Founded September 28, 1898 on the stocks of the Admiralty in the city of Nikolaev, the squadron battleship received the original name "Prince Potemkin-Tauride". According to tactical and technical characteristics, it was the most powerful in its class ship of the Russian Navy. In armament, he surpassed the squadron battleship "Retvizan", which was built in America for the Russian fleet, as well as the English battleships of the "Queen"type. The new battleship used for the first time centralized control of artillery fire from the Central post located in the combat cabin. He also became the first ship of the Russian fleet with boilers for liquid fuels. The battleship entered service on may 20, 1905, and on June 14 it broke out an uprising, which became one of the most notable events of the 1905 revolution. The assessments of this uprising changed in accordance with the change of the dominant ideology in the country – from negative to absolutely heroic. To erase the memory of the uprising, the battleship was renamed Panteleimon on October 12, 1905.
