Additional Information
During the war of independence of the United States, France supported the Americans not only by fighting at sea, but also by military supplies. One of the ships donated by the French was a frigate, 60 meters long, 18 meters wide, armed with 40 guns. Christened as “Bon Richard” (“good Richard”) (140001 Modeler 1/400 Frigate "Bon Richard"), he became the flagship of the fleet, which August 14, 1779 came to the English coast to block the military port of Edinburgh. At Cape Flamborough head, the Americans (commanded by captain Paul Jones) met an English convoy of 46 ships. In a fierce battle of “Good man Richard” (140001 Modelist 1/400 Frigate "Bonhomme Richard") fell on Board the ship with a 44-gun (according to other sources the 50-gun) by the English frigate “Serapis”. While the guns of the “Serapis” were shot at close range the case of “Good man Richard” (140001 Modelist 1/400 Frigate "Bonhomme Richard"), the Americans in hand-to-hand fight captured the first upper deck ‘of Serapis”, and then the entire ship. The riddled “good-Natured Richard” sank, and the captured “Serapis” replaced it as the flagship of the American fleet. Since then, the name of the ship “bonom Richard” in the U.S. Navy inherited.
