Underwater cruiser of the project 949A "Antey" — a series of nuclear submarines (NPS) of the third generation, armed with anti-ship cruise missiles "Granit", which was designed in the early 80-ies in KB "the ruby". Submarines of the project 949A, in fact, are an improved version of the ships of the project 949 "Granite", work on which began in the late 60's. the Main task of these underwater cruisers is the destruction of enemy strike aircraft carrier groups.
the First submarine of the 949A PROJECT was adopted by the Soviet Navy in 1986. A total of eleven submarines of this series were built, eight of which are currently serving in the Russian Navy. Another submarine is on preservation. Each of the "Ante" is the name of one of the Russian cities: Irkutsk, Voronezh, Smolensk, Chelyabinsk, Tver, Orel, Omsk and Tomsk.
