the Submarine "Kursk" belonged to the ships of project 949A "Antey". The history of submarines of this project dates back to the late 60 - ies of the last century. Submarines of the Antey project are considered by experts as one of the most perfect multipurpose boats today. The Kursk boat was laid in Severodvinsk in 1992, in 1994 it was launched, and in the same year it was accepted into the Northern fleet of the Russian Navy. The first commander of "Kursk" was the captain of the 2nd rank Rozhkov. At the time of his death, this ship was one of the most advanced in the Russian fleet.
Boats class "Antey" (Oscar-II, NATO classification) were designed in the USSR to counter the enemy aircraft carrier compounds and its nuclear submarines. Submarines of this class are armed with missiles "Granite" and torpedoes. They have extremely low noise and are unobtrusive. These are the real "killers of aircraft carriers", invisible and deadly.
