Additional Information
"Admiral Nakhimov" (until 1992 "Kalinin") is the third in a series of heavy nuclear missile cruiser of the "Kirov".
the Design and construction of a series of four ships of this project lasted more than twenty years. The head ship of the series – "Kirov" (since 1992, "Admiral Ushakov") was launched in 1977 and entered service in 1980, followed by the cruiser "Frunze" ("Admiral Lazarev") and "Kalinin" ("Admiral Nakhimov"). The construction of the "Peter the Great" lasted for twelve years (laid on the slipway on March 11, 1986, launched on April 29, 1989, went into operation in April 1998).
These cruisers do not have direct counterparts abroad, their displacement is about 2.5 times the displacement of American nuclear cruisers "Virginia", and the armament is much wider. Multi-purpose nuclear cruiser project 1144 incorporated almost the entire range of combat and technical means created for combat surface ships.
the Main striking weapon of the ship is the anti-ship complex of cruise missiles "Granite", which can carry both conventional and nuclear warhead. Anti-aircraft armament cruisers layered on principles, gauges and nomenclature air defense. It includes two long-range anti-aircraft missile systems "Fort" with a total ammunition of 96 missiles, launchers of anti-aircraft missile complex "Dagger", two paired launchers of anti-aircraft missiles "Wasp", and six combat modules of anti-aircraft missile and artillery complex of self-defense of the near border "Kortik". Artillery weapons presented two-gun 130-mm gun mount AK-130.
the Ships of this project also carry powerful anti-submarine weapons – an automated hydroacoustic complex "Polin" with the main antenna in the bow Bulba and an additional towed antenna; the complex provides combat use of anti-submarine guided missile torpedoes "Waterfall", as well as jet-bomb installations of anti-torpedo protection of the RBU-12000 "Udav".
2 ka-27 helicopters are also based On the ship, which can be used in reconnaissance and target designation options, anti-submarine and search and rescue. For their deployment provides a below deck hangar, the cellar of ammunition, lift and landing area.
