Perhaps the most interesting design feature of the liner was its waterproof bulkheads. The Titanic had a double bottom and was divided into 16 watertight compartments by fifteen watertight bulkheads. Strange, though, that these bulkheads didn't extend very high up. The first two and the last five bulkheads were brought to deck D, and the middle eight - only to deck E.
Nevertheless, the unsinkability of the liner was provided when any two compartments were flooded, and since the designers could not imagine misfortunes worse than a hole in the junction of the two compartments.
