USS CALIFORNIA (BB-44), was the second of two Tennessee class warships. The ship was laid down on October 25, 1916, launched on November 20, 1919 and adopted on August 10, 1921. At that time it was the largest ship built in the shipyard Mare Island.
December 3, 1941, during a RAID on pearl Harbor, California was flooded with a Japanese torpedo, but was commissioned and upgraded. Then the ship actively participated in military actions in the Pacific and supported the occupying allied forces in Japan until October 1945. California was decommissioned in February 1947 and sold for scrapping in July 1959.
