North Carolina (BB-55) was laid on 27 October 1937 at the new York naval shipyard; launched on 13 June 1940 and commissioned in new York on 9 April 1941. North Carolina completed its firefight in the Caribbean before the attack in pearl Harbor and after intense military exercises entered the Pacific on June 10, 1942. When the U.S. attacked Guadalcanal in early August, 1942, North Carolina was the only U.S. warship available to protect wasp CV-7, Saratoga CV-3, and Enterprise CV-6 carriers.
