Additional Information
Since world war I, Regia Marina (Italian Navy) has paid great attention to the development of small, fast ships, usually armed with torpedoes. Torpedo boats, or according to the Italian designation M. A. S. (motoscafo armato silurante), were based on civilian boats. In the First world war, the development brought results, including the sinking of the Austro-Hungarian ships Wien and Szent István. The fleet of this type was well suited for use in limited, shallow waters such as the Adriatic sea. The Navy continued to develop to improve the performance of fast boats. MAS 500 equipped with a gasoline engine Isotta-Fraschini, was built during the Second world war, had torpedo tubes and a platform for dumping depth charges. Boat speed was up to 40 knots, armament consisted of two 450 mm torpedoes.
