Additional Information

the Attack by the ultra-small submarines of type X of the British Navy battleship Tirpitz (22.09.43) served as a good reason for the development of ultra-small submarines in Germany. The first developed boat – type XXVII was called Necht ("Pike").
the Combat use of the boat was planned to be copied from the British – "Pike" had to be delivered to the line of attack by a surface vessel or submarine, after which the "Pike" had to independently reach the target and drop the combat unit next to it. The most important role was given to navigation equipment – for navigation in the underwater position "Pike" was equipped with a gyrocompass.
During the development of the project, it was decided to abandon the English scheme and arm the "Pike" with a conventional torpedo, instead of a combat unit, a compartment with additional batteries was installed. Simultaneously with the development of the dropped mine, work was carried out to create a special bow compartment for the transportation of saboteur divers and their equipment. However, both the mine and the compartment for divers have not been developed. Until the end of exploitation "Pike" could bear only one torpedo G7e.
the Project of the ultra-small submarine was ready by the beginning of 1944. On January 18, gross-Admiral dönitz presented a new project to the top leadership of Hitler's Germany. The proposed development was approved, which led to the appearance of the first order for the construction of the prototype. On March 9, the shipbuilding company Germaniawerft was given an order for the construction of three experimental submarines of a new type.
the First three serial submarines differed from the following. Unlike the other submarines of the series, they had mounts for the installation of nose drop mines. In the future, all serial "Pike" equipped only with nose fairing with additional batteries.
Three prototypes and 50 production boats were built – a total of 53 units.
the experience Gained in the course of design and testing allowed German designers to develop several types of more advanced small submarines in a short time. As a result, "Pike" in the fighting did not participate and were used to train the crews of boats "Molch" and "Seehund".
