Additional Information
Submarines type XVII — experimental series of small submarines equipped with a Walter engine, allowing to develop high speeds when driving under water and consume less oxygen, allowing the boat to stay longer in the underwater position.
In the early 1930s, Helmut Walter designed a small high-speed submarine powered by perhydrol (hydrogen peroxide in a stable form). In 1939, he signed a contract to build an experimental submarine, the 80-ton V-80, which developed a speed of 28.1 knots underwater during tests in 1940. In November 1940, Admiral Erich Reder and Werner Fuchs (head of The design Bureau Kriegsmarine) observed the tests of the PL V-80. Raeder was amazed at what he saw, but Fuchs was in no hurry to give approval for further tests.
