Type UB I submarines belonged to the class of small coastal submarines built in Germany at the beginning of the First world war.
Submarines of this class could operate only in coastal waters, at a short distance from their bases. The main advantage of the series was the short construction time - 4 months from the bookmark to the introduction. Because of this the Germans in the shortest terms has managed to improve its submarine force. In addition, due to the small size of the boat could somersault by rail to other theaters of war.
the Design of the series began in mid-August 1914, and on 15 October the first 15 boats were ordered by two German shipyards - UB 1 - UB 8 ordered by Germaniawerft, and UB 9 - UB 15 by AG Weser. The boats were built on one project, but each shipyard made its own changes in the appearance of the boat, according to its technological capabilities. This model repeats the appearance of UB 1 - UB 8 boats.
the German Imperial fleet subsequently ordered an additional pair of boats to replace the boats transferred to Austria-Hungary, additionally ordered three more boats in April 1915. A total of 20 UB type I boats were built.
