To replace the first post-war ocean-going boats of project 611 in the late 1950s, the CCB-18 developed a new project, designated 641. Chief designer of the project was S. A. Egorov, then the post in 1958 and was occupied by Z. A. Deribin, since 1974, the Kormilitsin, Y. N. Project 641 was intended to perform the same tasks as the project 611: fighting at long communications, mine-laying, reconnaissance, anti-submarine actions. In comparison with the previous project 611, the boats of the project 641 had greater autonomy and range of navigation, greater depth of immersion, improved weapons and improved living conditions of the crew.
