K-222 — Soviet nuclear submarine of the second generation, armed with cruise missiles P-70 "Amethyst", the only ship built under the project 661 "ANCHAR". The fastest submarine in the world, reaching underwater speeds of over 82 km/h (44 knots). For the high cost of construction of the boat nicknamed "goldfish".
In December 1959, after the release of the resolution of the Central Committee of the CPSU and the Council of Ministers of the USSR "On the creation of a new high-speed submarine, new types of power plants and research, development and design work for submarines", the CCB-16 (now SPMBM "malachite") began work on the creation of a high-speed submarine of a new generation, with a titanium improved nuclear power plant and with the possibility of launching cruise missiles from the underwater position (for the armament of the boat in 1960, the design of the PKR P-70 Amethyst was started). The submarine was intended for missile and torpedo attacks on aircraft carrier formations of the enemy.
