history:

the Great Patriotic war began rapidly and unexpectedly. In a short time were lost Belarus and the Baltic States, Soviet troops retreated to Kiev, the enemy stood at the gate of Smolensk. In this difficult time, millions of Soviet people were in a hurry to get to the front. Long queues to the military enlistment office became an ordinary sight. Unfit for military service also wanted to stand up for the homeland.

on July 4, 1941, a decree of the State defense Committee announced the recruitment of the people's militia division. In July, only in Moscow, 12 divisions of the people's militia were formed and sent to the front. The militia received the necessary training and weapons. However, all weapons were not enough, therefore, in the course were captured rifles and grenades.  In the Besieged Leningrad many working battalions went into battle in civilian clothes. Basically, the militia were those who for some reasons could not join the army, the cream of the Moscow and Leningrad intelligentsia voluntarily went to the front.  

Initially, the divisions were intended for the construction of fortifications on the Mozhaisk line of defense. But due to the sharp deterioration of the situation, the divisions were thrown into battle. One of them excelled in the capture of the city of Yelnya. Almost all divisions of the Moscow militia were lost in an environment near Vyazma, but 3 divisions over time became guards and ended war in Germany.
