in the Beginning of 1950-x years training pilots of the Royal air force was still carried out on the aircraft the Provost (Percival) with piston engines. The management of the company "Hunting Group" considered the use of RAF as a training at the same time the piston Provost and Vampire jet illogical, therefore, initiated the development of the jet versions of the aircraft the Provost for the implementation of a full cycle of training of young pilots.
This variant, designated P. 84 Jet Provost, retained the wing and tail from the original Provost aircraft, but received a new fuselage, which housed the turbojet engine and retractable tricycle landing gear with nose wheel. Prototype aircraft (XD674) first took off on June 26, 1954
