Predecessor UT-2 was an experienced aircraft air-10. The first flight of this machine made July 11, 1935 years and, after testing at the Institute of air force air-10 considered suitable for use as a training and sports aircraft. In 1937, the aircraft was renamed the I-20, putting to the test two variants, differing in the power system. The first I-20 was equipped with AN m-11E engine (150 HP), a little later it was installed on floats and used to set records. The second version of the aircraft had a French Renault engine “Bengali” (140 HP). Both aircraft successfully flew, but the state tests were put forward the requirement to increase the range. It was necessary to increase the fuel supply, which added 112 kg of weight and slightly reduced the speed, but the flight duration was 7 hours.
