The basis of the design of the aircraft was taken predecessor Sopwith Pup. Given that it was necessary to install a larger and heavier engine, General designer Herbert Smith (Herbert Smith) went to a number of alterations. In particular, they touched the landing gear, increasing the area of the wings and the stabilizer, the fuselage acquired an influx of repeating camel hump. A little later, this led to the name of the fighter - Sopwith Camel. Of the features of the design include a compact arrangement of the pilot, fuel tanks, armament and the engine. The first test flight was made in may 1917.
