CR-42 - designed by Rosatelli according to the requirements of the Italian Ministry of aviation to the highly maneuverable biplane fighter. The experience of the war in Spain convinced the Italian experts in the prospects of biplanes. The prototype performed the first flight on may 23, 1938, by this time the process of transferring fighter aircraft from biplanes to monoplanes had already begun in the leading European countries. CR.42 designed taking into account the experience gained in the development and operation of CR.32, retaining the layout of the one-and-a-half plan, but obtaining a star-shaped motor, as in the experimental CR.40 and CR.41
