Additional Information
Thin, vulnerable, with a lack of range and unable to fly for a long time, SBD "Dauntless" (Dauntless - "fearless") of the company "Douglas" rightly earned him the humiliating nickname. But, nevertheless, he was a participant in the victorious war, played a crucial role in the early battles in the Pacific ocean and sent to the bottom of a larger tonnage of Japanese ships than any other aircraft. The dive bomber turned the tide of the war at the battle of midway Atoll on June 4, 1942. The reasons for this success for specialists are not obvious: the aircraft had a low thrust-to-weight ratio, providing only more or less satisfactory values of rate of climb and maneuverability; the weapon system worked with failures, and from time to time a sub-fuselage bomb of 227 kg caliber fell uselessly into the sea.
