Additional Information
the First prototype of the TB-7 bomber (PE-8) was built in the Tupolev design Bureau in the autumn of 1936 by a team of designers under the leadership of V. M. Petlyakov. To ensure flight in rarefied air at the maximum height inside the fuselage was installed motor M-100 (850 HP), which supplied air to four liquid-cooled engine AM-34FRN. In 1938, the second improved version of the bomber was built. By increasing the fuel capacity of the range increased to 3500 km. speed at an altitude of 8600 m is 430 km/h Practical ceiling - 11250 m. Bomb load - 2000 kg. the Plane was adopted and built at the Kazan aviation plant N124. Some TB-7s were produced with m-40 and M-30 aircraft diesel engines. Because of the revealed unreliability of diesel engines on TB-7 began to install AM-35A. About a third of all bombers were built with engines M-82 (1700 HP).
In July 1941 was formed the first fighting unit commanded by the famous polar pilot M. V. Vodopyanov, and in August 1941 this unit had carried out a RAID on Berlin. During this long-range flight, the TB-7 carried three tons of bombs. In 1942, the crew of the pilot E. K. Pusep performed a difficult flight with a length of 17800 km, delivering to England a Soviet diplomatic mission led by V. I. Molotov. During the return trip to Moscow, the plane crossed the Nazi-occupied Europe in the daytime at an altitude of 7000 m. In 1942, after the death of V. M. Petlyakov. for the aircraft approved the name PE-8. In total, 93 bombers of various modifications were built.
