the development Of the de Havilland Canada DHC-4 Caribou aircraft began in 1956 as part of the research program for air-based transport aircraft for the canadian air force and the United States. One third of the R & d costs were taken over by the us Department of defense. The first flight of "Caribou" took place on 30 July 1958, the Car had excellent landing characteristics and can be used with minimally prepared unpaved runways with low density of soil (e.g., loose sand). In addition, the presence of a loading ramp allowed to transport cargo containers and wheeled vehicles with the possibility of air landing. The rear cargo door was designed as a ramp for cargo up to 3048 kg. In the military transport version, it could accommodate up to 32 soldiers.
