The DHC-5 Buffalo differed from its predecessor DHC-4 Caribou in its extended fuselage and turboprop engines. It was originally called Caribou II. The US army has ordered four machines for evaluation. Development costs were shared by the us Army, the government of Canada and the development firm. The first of these transport aircraft took off on 9 April 1964. DHC-5 developed by order of the us Army on a transport aircraft capable of carrying bulky cargo such as rocket Pershing, 105-mm howitzer or nine-ton truck. The maximum payload of DHC-5 was 4822 kg.
