On an initiative basis, a group of engineering and technical workers of the Gorky aviation plant under the leadership of Chief designer E. I. Mindrov developed a version of the modernization of the serial interceptor. To check proposals Gorky engineers have identified one of the MiG-31 (after modernization has received the hull number the ' 503 pod in blue); the revision was aimed at facilitating the construction and improvement of the efficiency of production of the aircraft, significant changes have been made to the fuel system. Flight tests showed that as a result of changes in the location of the fuel tanks, the center of gravity of the aircraft shifted, which worsened the stability and controllability of the interceptor. Board ╚503╩ participated in the flight test program MiG-31M.
