In 1960 on the basis of the Yak-27K and Yak-28 was created a new two-seater supersonic interceptor Yak-28P. It was designed to combat air targets at low and medium altitudes in a large range of speeds day and night in any weather. The aircraft was equipped with a modified K-8M-1 weapon system consisting of two R-8M-1 missiles with thermal and radar semi-active guidance heads, launchers and eagle-D radar. Guns were not installed. In comparison with the decision taken in 1958 in the armament of air defense interceptor su-9 this system was more sophisticated and allowed us to produce the launch of rockets at a much greater distance to the target.
In the future it was planned to install a more advanced system of weapons K-98, created on the basis of K-8M-1. The rest of the radio equipment did not differ from the previous modifications of the Yak-28, except for the additional installed radio command guidance station "Lazur".
the Yak-28P Interceptor had the same layout as the Yak-27K, but the pylons for missiles were located not on the inside of the nacelles, but on the outside. The cockpit and the pilot-operator had a common lantern, it was possible to control the aircraft from both jobs. On an experimental machine was initially standing engines R-11АФ-300 in the gondola of the old type. In the process of testing more stable operation of the compressors of the engines were trying to achieve by changing the shape of the Central body of the air intake. After this and a number of other improvements relating mainly to equipment, the aircraft was designated Yak-28PD. However, in this embodiment, the interceptor did not satisfy the customer.
