In 1943 production of the Spitfire Mk modification began.VIII with retractable tail wheel and increased range. These fighters served in the Mediterranean and Pacific theaters of operations in the us air force and Australia.
Part of the aircraft "Spitfire" equipped with engines Packard Merline American production and was designated as the Spitfire Mk.XVI. Aircraft of late series had drop-shaped cockpit lights. Spitfire Mk.XVI used as low-altitude fighters and fighter-bombers before the end of hostilities in Europe.
