the SB (high-speed bomber) was one of the world's first twin-engine bombers with smooth metal plating and retractable landing gear. SB (ANT-40) was constructed in KB an. Tupolev under the leadership of A. A. Arkhangelsk. It made its first flight on October 7, 1934.


the First production aircraft were equipped with M-100 engines. They took part in the Spanish civil war. Republicans gave them the nickname "Katyushka" and nationalists– "Martin bomber".

From 1937 to serial security Council began to install the motor M-100A with three-bladed propellers VISH-2. These aircraft formed the basis of Soviet bomber aircraft. The SB took part in many armed conflicts of the late 30s –, the Soviet-Japanese on the Khalkhin Gol river, the Soviet-Finnish Winter war, as well as in the battles of the first period of the war on the Soviet-German front.

In 1938 began licensed production of SB 2M-100 in the Czechoslovak company Avia called B-71. These aircraft later served in the Bulgarian air force and the German Luftwaffe.
