1930-ies– "Golden age" of fighter-biplanes. In the Soviet Union, they were designed N. N. Polikarpov– "the king of fighters". The first Soviet large-scale fighter I-5 was created by him in 1930.

Further development of I-15 became I-15 BIS. Its main differences were the "normal" center wing of the upper wing and the hood type NACA. Serial production of the I-15bis began in 1937 and continued until 1939.

I-16 was the world's first high-speed fighter. Free-carrying monoplane with retractable landing gear And-16 was created N. N. Polikarpov in 1933.
