In July 1938, 15 months after receiving the design assignment, the chief designer and chief test pilot of the company Focke-wolf in one person, Kurt Tank, raised the first prototype Fw-189 V-1 (V - Versuchsmuster, experimental) in the air, the aircraft had a civil registration D-OPVN.
Engines of pre-production aircraft had two-bladed wooden propellers. The screws had a fixed pitch, which is why the efficiency of the power plant fell significantly. With a monthly interval, the second prototype Fw-189V-2 (D-OPHD) took off, followed in September by Fw-189V-3 (W.Nr ahhh! 1999, D-ORMH, later registration changed to military GJ+RT)
