The design was once again strengthened, radio equipment was improved and a new VDM screw was installed. So there was the Ar-196A-3 and similar modification of the Ar-196A-4 to take off from the catapult.
Ar-196A-3 had on its Board one of the best German ships - battleship "Bismarck". When may 26, 1941 already damaged torpedo battleship was discovered patrol "Catalina" British air force, the Germans tried to shoot it down by launching a catapult of his "Arado". However, the attack failed, and two days later approached the British squadron sank "Bismarck".
In mid-1941 squadron 5./196 with its 26 aircraft (except Ar-196A-3 there were several Non-114) carried out sorties over the Bay of Biscay, intercepting bombers "Whitley", hunted for German submarines. Float "Arado" equipped and squadrons of naval reconnaissance air groups: one appeared in the Baltic sea, and the other was based in Norway.
