Additional Information
An-2 (NATO codification: Colt - "Foal") - light transport aircraft, biplane with a brace wing. Soviet folk name - maize (inherited from PO-2). The world's largest single-engine biplane in the history of aviation. It is also the only aircraft in the world, the production of which has been going on for more than 60 years.
One of the few long-lived aircraft, it carries passengers and cargo, is used for processing agricultural land, patrolling forests as sanitary, training, aerial photography, etc. During this time, the "An-2" became known in many countries of the world (the aircraft was exported to 26 countries). He made his first flight on August 31, 1947. Serial production began in the USSR in 1948, and since 1960 its production was moved to Poland. Until 1996, they were released more than 17 thousand, now it is produced in China.
This aircraft is made according to the biplane scheme, which seemed an anachronism in the 40s of the 20th century. However, it is this scheme, combined with a powerful engine, was optimal for the aircraft of this class and provided him with excellent takeoff and landing characteristics. Due to the high reliability, ease of operation and maintenance, versatility and the ability to operate from small sites, "An-2" has found extremely wide application on short-haul air lines. Being suitable for work from unprepared soil sites and having a small run-up and mileage, easy to operate, it was indispensable for work in underdeveloped areas of Siberia and the Far North, where it was used everywhere.
the Creation of such an aircraft has significantly expanded the network of local airlines and accelerate the delivery of passengers and cargo from the hinterland to the district centers. It not only reduced the distance for the inhabitants of remote areas, but also significantly changed their way of life.
