One of the most interesting aircraft during the Second World war is considered to be the German fighter Messerschmitt 163V "Comet". It was a small machine, designed according to the original scheme "tailless" and equipped with a powerful jet engine, accelerates the aircraft to a huge, at that time, speed. "Comet" was the world's first fighter with a liquid-jet engine, took part in the fighting.
the Airframe of the aircraft was designed by Alexander lippish, known for his innovative ideas, and an engine developed by Helmut Walter was installed as a power plant. In 1940, the aircraft was tested without an engine (as a glider), and in April 1941, he made the first flight with the engine from the airfield research center in peenemünde. (The designation "Messerschmitt" he received, because it was built in the factories of the Messerschmitt). When there was a more powerful and reliable engine Walter HWK 109-509A, it was decided to use for Me-163 it. The aircraft with this engine was designated Me-163V and made its first flight in April 1942 years.
the Aircraft had a mixed design – a metal fuselage, an all-wood swept wing and covered with a cloth control surface. The two-wheeled chassis was dropped after take-off (to save weight), and landing was made on a retractable metal ski. But the main "highlight", perhaps, was the power plant of the aircraft. Walter's engine – the world's first serial liquid-jet engine - was compact, light weight (only 165 kg) and huge power – the thrust force exceeded the weight of the engine ten times! But the engine was very dangerous to operate, and its life was only two hours. The so-called "C – substance" (30% solution of hydrosine hydrate in methanol) and "T-substance" (concentrated 80% solution of hydrogen peroxide plus stabilizing additives) were used as fuel. No ignition was required – once these liquids were mixed, they instantly turned into a gas of high temperature and pressure. To protect against aggressive liquids pilots were forced to wear special overalls, shoes and helmets made of asbestos cloth, as well as rubber gloves. From the same fabric was made and backpack parachute. Was also dressed and ground technical staff.
Since the engine Walter was an extraordinary "gluttony", the time and the range was low. In addition, the high speed of the flight made it difficult to use the aircraft as an interceptor: with a difference in speeds of several hundred km/h, the pilot of the Messerschmitt had only a few seconds left to fire the attacked bomber, and a repeated attack was often no longer possible due to fuel production. After the use of fuel, the aircraft planned to land on the airfield, made a landing on the ski and was taken to the starting position by a special tractor on a caterpillar cart.
In the fighting managed to take part only 1st Fighter Group (I/JG 400), which has chalked up nine enemy aircraft, while losing fourteen of their (of them are combat losses amounted to only five cars). The 2nd Fighter Group (II/JG 400) reached combat readiness at the end of the war, but the lack of fuel did not allow it to take part in the battles, and the 3rd Fighter Group (III/JG 400) was in the formation stage.
